<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Punk rock began as a response to the big budget, over produced music of 1970s. It was a reaction to disco and arena rock. So what is post-punk? The etymology of the word points to it being after punk, but that is not the meaning because punk music is stilling being made today. An interesting analogy can be made with literature to shine a light on the subject of post-punk. Modern literature did not cease to be written after the advent of post-modern literature. The two exist simultaneously as movements in literature. Thus punk and post-punk exist as musical movements. Post-punk is all most a catchall category for underground, indie, or lo-fi guitar rock. It is also the music most representative of the slacker traditions of gen-x.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">So how did post-punk begin? It's a hard question to answer, but I think it began as a reaction to the nihilism of punk rock. Punk music was defined by its aggressive vocals, and often sloppy, simple instrumentation. More over, the punks were marked by their attitude, where as most post-punk musicians can be marked by their lack of attitude. Punk music wanted to create a revolution. Post-punk music wanted to create art. The D.I.Y. (Do it Yourself) ethic of punk was perhaps the greatest influence the genre had on post-punk. Post-punk bands initially avoided major record labels in the pursuit of artistic freedom, and out of an 'us against them' stance towards the corporate rock world.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">to typify the 'art-band'. The group's musical style and unpredictable mode of performance,</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">incoherence and collapse...) are for Esther a means of counter-attack and critique against a</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"> Following with a much more mature sound and appearance were Dirty Snow. A band with an average age of about thirty, they</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">bash ‘em out with the best of them. With the ‘wall of noise’-ness of ‘Sonic Youth,’ and the conservative gothness of ‘Siouxsie and the Banshees,’’Dirty snow` show a fierceness that would make children cry. Most striking is undoubtedly the leading lady. She looks like Shelley Duvall of ‘The Shining’ fame. Wendy Torrence armed with an arsenal of twisted, tortured writhing, gyrating ‘dance’ moves to send Jack Nicholson straight to hell. No discernible words came from her mouth, and if they did were hidden under the screams and wails of that wild banshee woman. But hey, who needs words anyway. The ‘Dirty Snows’ are not at all precious about their sound, giving it up for an energy that truly shakes and stirs the front woman. ‘Dirty Snow’ are not doing anything particularly new, if anything they are playing on old styles, but their energy is fresh, sincere and exciting to watch. It’s just a shame they burnt out after only 15-20 mins.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Dirty Snow are an enigma at first glance: a starkly monochromatic male/female duo, making atmospheric post-punk in the vein of Faith and the Cure era - an influence they pay tribute to with a cover of 'All Cats Are Grey' - and under the influence of electronic music and shoegaze. It takes a little investigation to discover their origins in a gallery in Hackney in 1999 as a conceptual 'ghost band' founded by artists Esther Planas and Marc Hulson for the Five Years project. Since then they've played around London and Europe for nights including Decasia and Zoo Music. How The New Thing have missed them so far is largely due to their lack of publicity - this isn't a band so much as an experimental artistic project, with possibly the least commercial approach we've ever seen. That we haven't previously picked up on them is our mistake, since they make some of the best music we've encountered fresh for quite some time - and apparently their live appearances are even better. Discover them now to make up for nine years' worth of lost time.</span><br />

In her first London solo-show, Planas uses Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs du Mal as an oblique model via which to position herself as a kind of contemporary flaneur – an artist adrift in the Metropolis of London – losing herself in its archives and myths, its imaginary signifiers, its cultural ghosts; investigating its mythologies and pop-cultural iconographies, lost in the graveyard of its history, it’s gothic cemetary of romace and death; tracing the invisible thread that links the myth of beautiful teenage rock star poets flowering in bleak urban estates with the myth of Mina and Dracula (revealed by Copolla as the first junkie star). London as fairytale.<br />
<br />
Eroticism, addiction, depression (spleen, ennui), the void, style, fashion: the city as a treacherous fantasy island, where popular culture dies and is born and gets trampled by the mass – maybe somewhere inbetween the not-yet and the never-to-be the artist retrieves something.<br />
<br />
The scrambled sequence of slides linking unrelated fragments , the use of collage, copying, cut’n’paste in Dark Star, the forming of an installation from separate works (video, book, slideshow, soundtrack) – Esther Planas has created an enclosed world out of an assemblage of related works. The gallery becomes a neverland where the walls are covered in posters , we look at images of flowers and beautiful boys, watch music videos, play records and leaf through incomprehensible magazines for ever. Where the music is always the soundtrack of a lost afternoon, a lost weekend. We’re in a room, on a sofa, on a bed, on an island. Tomorrow never comes… in the end it’s just a question of whether or not you want to believe… the beautiful and the damned.<br />
<br />
Her use of the image of the junkie, and of the trade names of pharmaceutical anti-depressants, symbolise a condition of suffering, need, dependancy – in relation to an apprehension of contemporary life as unbearable: time is passing, time is wasted, there is no escape from the relentless, cyclic demands of the social structure. The hypodermic and the drug names are like the poison, reminding us of the presence of death, the flower, the beautiful boy.<br />

Her dandyism asserts itself through an ostentatious dilletantism, through the casual, unfinished appearance of the work. Planas is not so much a multi-media artist as an artist who works across media, disregarding the criteria of technical specialisms, with a disdain for “professionalism’ which translates as a rejection of ‘work’ (and the work ethic). Her langourous preoccupation with style, with appearances, asserts the glamour of uselessness – symbolised ultimately in the image of the junkie. The artist is under no illusions about the futility of escapism – it would be more accurate to assume that the futility itself is a token of its value.<br />

With reference to Baudelaire’s status as declasse, an outsider, the sinful little girl, the girl that masturbates, the girl that dreams of the undead; but the girl who is stigmatised by illness – depression, epilepsy, addiction. Could this be the satanic girl???<br />
<br />
Symbolic of the metropolis – the individual/ artist who feels the necessity of constructing an entire world, a fantasy – who, constructing herself as image/persona, makes herself the poetry in a Baudelairean sense.<br />

The light in the gallery is low, filtered through heavy pink and blue gels covering the windows, while a single red spot illuminates a record player on the floor. There are also large velvet cushions on the floor, where you can sit and read densely illustrated fanzines/books….. The walls are covered in posters – big zeroxed images, like the ones in the books, showing drawings of junkies, picture-book girls and… the brand names of pharmaceutical anti-depressents are wrtten across them, descriptions of treatments for epilepsy…. On one of the posters it says – “and he left her forever”. A 12” vinyl is revolving silently on the turntable – you play it and hear minimal post-punk, goth –pop music – a female voice with a heavy european accent sings the same phrases over and over again – “I’m losing control”, “I’ve been crying all night”. On one of the walls slides are being projected: there are images of a beautiful boy in his room – playing records, playing his guitar. He looks iconic, like a pop star, but we don’t know who he is (some of the images are intimate, close up). These images are intercut with shots of an urban housing estate and blurred close-ups of flowers.<br />
The atmosphere in the room is intimate and enclosed, but it feels like a space where you can get lost – like a private room, where you read and listen and look and drift in thoughts. Heady – everything is eroticised, but the symbols of illness, poison are everywhere – vampirism, drugs, medication<br />

In his essay on Baudelaire, Sartre describes the cult of dandyism in 19th century Paris as a kind of ‘suicides club’.<br />
<br />
For her first London solo-show, Esther Planas has taken Baudelaire’s cycle of poems ‘Les Fleurs du Mal” (with its infamous themes of….) as a kind of oblique model for her own drifting investigations through subjects of forms of contemporary ennui and spiritual malaise – addiction, the vampiric cult of beauty, youth, …<br />
In this way she also positions herself, in terms of her role both as a contemporary woman artist and as an outsider (adrift in London) as akind of female dandy.<br />
Position as a female dandy – through attitude rather than an obvious issue of self- presentation. Especially important is the use of the images of boys – the conjunctions of eroticisation, indifference and forms of sickness. Also dilletantism.<br />
Cult of beauty…. Perishable(p.145 ) suicides club - the supreme sacrament (p.146). Self-annihilation and the cult of the self/ego-cult.<br />
‘Underground’ stance and underground aesthetic – it should in no way be interpreted as neo-hippy ‘alternative’ – it’s quite the opposite – it is anti-burgeoise but in an elitist and ultmately aristocratic sense in so far as it signals an identification with a lineage of extreme individualists, posers and dandies – the assertion of difference as an heroic and noble act , the rejection of utilitarian values at every level – linking Baudelaire to Woolf to Burroughs to Sid Vicious and Ian Curtis. In the image of the junkie or the suicide this is realised symbolically (the supremesacrament). The concept of an underground elite realised in the expectation of being misunderstood as a sign – those who don’t ‘get it’ are outside the elite ‘community’.<br />
The installation can appear hermetic, closed – but if you allow yourself to ‘drift’ and to investigate, and if you ‘know’ the references, then the clues/signs are there. In the video where the girl dreams about a meeting with a vampire (the vampire – an aristocratic figure who is also marked by difference through his sickness, his addiction), there is a poster of Sid Vicious behind her on the wall of the bedroom. On the wall of the gallery another poster shows a crude drawing of a girl (who resembles the girl in the video) injecting herself with a hypodermic. The record plays a minimal post-punk song (which is also the soundtrack to the vampire video) with repetetive lyrics – ‘I’m losing control’ which refer to Ian Curtis’s vocal for the Joy Division song ‘She’s Lost Control’. On another poster is a description from a child’s book of treatment for epilepsy while other posters feature the brand names of pharmaceutical anti-depressants. A chain of references is set up through different media linking the figures and themes of the vampire, addiction, the junkie, the suicide, the doomed pop icon, illness, treatment and depression (a community of proud but lost/doomed outsiders, icons of ‘difference’). <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Melting the roles of Irma Vep and the Sleep Walker, the film again travels through the topics of Pop Music, Love and the Undead and exposes its aesthetics during a time of industrial revolution, the first world war ( pre and post), the fears that hide on such symbolic themes.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">The idea of the Revolutionary Woman, instilled by Feulliade's Les Vampires can't be ignored as the notion of what really means Vampirism in general, for a burgueoise society ... the coded style of the narrative at the video on the installation, as to suggest how so much of this issues that are now part of our culture trough out Pop Culture, still reminds us of its strength as real dangers, mixed class and race, sexual venereal illness contagion and madness.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">On its formal delivered way, the installation suggest the Theatre Stage or Film Stage, where precarious material, creates contrast of blacks and whites, light and shadows, quite near to what must had been the shooting site for Das Cabinet of D.C.... and also a flavour of a Jean Cocteau set... the highlight of Geometrical shapes and relations inside the white cube as on a way to pin down philosophical proportions and values materialising as angles and triangles of all sort, capturing the spirit of the times.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">The film was show at her solo show in Barcelona 2007 at Spai Ubu and was part of an installation that set the context of a sort of Stage made by giant cut- ups , paintings and huge drawings.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><span class="text"></span><br /><span class="text">Esther Planas (Barcelona, 1960) fa de les seves obsessions art.</span><br /><span class="text">Un procés que, d'altra banda, sol ser habitual en la creació artística.</span><br /><span class="text">Les obsessions que l'acompanyen, també circumstància habitual</span><br /><span class="text">en la creació contemporània, fan referència a la seva infància.</span><br /><span class="text">El seu nom, com moltes noies entre 30 i 40 anys, va adquirir una</span><br /><span class="text">dimensió especial gràcies a una sèrie de còmic, que la seva autora,</span><br /><span class="text">Purita Campos, ha recuperat 20 anys després amb la protagonista</span><br /><span class="text">feta una dona: <i>Esther y su mundo</i>. Aquest referent, que</span><br /><span class="text">gràficament ha interpretat Planas en els seus dibuixos i quadres</span><br /><span class="text">(a més d'un marxandatge bàsic), al costat de la plasmació</span><br /><span class="text">d'una sexualitat fronterera entre el món infantil i l'adult és</span><br /><span class="text">la base del seu univers. Noies nues, creades a partir de la</span><br /><span class="text">seva pròpia imatge, i que solen tenir com a company un peluix,</span><br /><span class="text">completen aquesta forma de remoure els fantasmes infantils.</span><br /><span class="text">Aquest univers ha estat present amb un llibre de dibuixos i</span><br /><span class="text">textos anomenat <i>Dark Star </i>i amb els muntatges que ha anat</span><br /><span class="text">fent en espais singulars on els quadres i dibuixos han format</span><br /><span class="text">una instal·lació. Aquest món és el que acompanya el vídeo que</span><br /><span class="text">presenta a la galeria de Poblenou Espai Ubú, però sense fer-se obvi.</span><br /><span class="text">Només com a llavor del món d'Esther Planes, que ha necessitat</span><br /><span class="text">visualitzar els seus fantasmes per arribar ara a una obra videogràfica</span><br /><span class="text">molt suggeridora.</span><br /><span class="text">L'exposició posa en evidència que tot el que ha format el contingut</span><br /><span class="text">conceptual de l'artista ha de sortir del seu camp de l'expressió matèrica.</span><br /><span class="text">L'artista ha de concentrar-se en el vessant d'expressió gestual,</span><br /><span class="text">de dansa i de música, que utilitza en el vídeo que presenta.</span><br /><span class="text">Cap a final dels anys noranta, Esther Planes va anar a viure a Londres,</span><br /><span class="text">on va formar un grup que actua en circuits <i>underground</i> amb una</span><br /><span class="text">musicalitat gòtica i fosca que té equivalència amb la imatge i la veu de l'artista.</span><br /><span class="text">El vídeo, per a la presentació del qual no calia el muntatge fet a la galeria,</span><br /><span class="text">és una deliciosa peça inquietant en què trobem una pinzellada del realitzador</span><br /><span class="text">alemany Murnau, un toc de <i>pop</i> dels seixanta però en blanc i negre,</span><br /><span class="text">una mica d'ona sinistra dels anys vuitanta, i un toc més d'aquest corrent</span><br /><span class="text">estètic i musical revitalitzat actualment amb la moda gòtica.</span><br /><span class="text">Esther Planas hi intervé amb escenes de ball i cantant amb el seu grup</span><br /><span class="text">Dirty Snow la versió d'un tema del grup The Cure, totalment encertada,</span><br /><span class="text">tant la tria de la música, com la versió de Planes, que li dóna un to encara</span><br /><span class="text">més lúgubre que escau a les imatges de cementiris que apareixen en el vídeo.</span><br /><span class="text"><br /></span></span></td></tr>
